Is Medicare Free When You Turn 65 for Seniors?

Turning 65 is an important milestone, and many people wonder if Medicare is automatically free. The answer is not always. While some parts of Medicare may be available without a monthly premium, other coverage options still require costs such as premiums, deductibles, or copays.

Most people qualify for premium-free Medicare Part A if they or their spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years. Part A generally helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice, and some home health services. However, Medicare Part B, which covers doctor visits, preventive care, outpatient services, and medical equipment, requires a monthly premium for most beneficiaries.

Many seniors also choose to enroll in Medicare Part D for prescription drug coverage or a Medicare Advantage plan, both of which may have additional monthly costs depending on the plan selected.

Understanding your Medicare options before enrolling can help you avoid unexpected expenses and ensure you have the coverage you need. If you have recently been hospitalized, undergone surgery, or are managing a chronic condition, you may also qualify for Medicare-covered home health services when ordered by your physician.

At OCTIHEALTH, we work alongside physicians and families to provide compassionate, Medicare-covered home health services that help eligible patients recover safely at home.
