Yes, Medicare may cover home health care after surgery when specific eligibility requirements are met. This coverage can help patients recover safely at home following a joint replacement, cardiac procedure, abdominal surgery, or another operation.

To qualify for Medicare home health care after surgery, a doctor or other authorized provider must certify that you are homebound and need part-time or intermittent skilled care. Being homebound generally means leaving home is difficult and requires considerable effort, assistance, or supportive equipment. Care must be provided by a Medicare-certified home health agency.

OCTIHEALTH can work with your surgeon and physician to create a personalized post-surgical care plan. Depending on your medical needs, an OCTIHEALTH skilled nurse may assess your incision, provide wound care, monitor for signs of infection, review medications, manage injections, and teach you and your caregiver how to support a safe recovery.

OCTIHEALTH may also provide physical therapy after surgery to improve strength, balance, walking, and mobility. Occupational therapy can help you safely complete daily activities such as bathing, dressing, and preparing meals. Home health aides may assist with personal care when these services are included in your approved care plan.

Medicare does not cover around-the-clock care, meal delivery, or custodial personal care when that is the only service needed. Coverage is based on medical necessity and individual eligibility.

Planning before leaving the hospital can make the transition home easier. Ask your surgeon or discharge planner about a referral to OCTIHEALTH.
